It’s just not possible for me, the adult, to betray me, the child, by giving this and the rest of the Lensman series anything less than 5 stars. The Children of the Lens, together with the mental power of unknown millions of Lensmen of the Galactic Patrol, constitute the Arisians’ intended means to destroy the Eddorians and make the universe safe for Civilization. I assumed that classic was synonymous with quality but this is not the case.

seriew I’ve heard people rave about how Doc Smith’s work was one of the early space operas and that it influenced many later science fiction masterpieces. Michael Straczynskithe creator of Babylon 5confirmed that Howard had acquired the rights and also hinted that he was involved in the project.

First Lensman was written in to act as a link between Triplanetary and Galactic Patrol and finally, in the years up toSmith revised the rest of the series to remove lenskan between the original Lensman chronology and Triplanetary. The things SF writers feel they need to explain! Crazy, good, fun stuff.

Second Stage Lensmen Kim Kinnison, Number One man of his time, had faced challenges before – but rarely one as daunting as this.
Admire them for their influence on later, better works, but please don’t feel deries to actually read them. All this activity was in the interest of turning it into an explanatory prelude to the original form of Smith’s “Lensman” series, which ran in the science fiction magazine “Astounding” during the late s and s and was enormously popular.
The space battles are actually numerous and exciting. Because of its place as a classic on many sci-fi lists and its significance as an early sci-fi read and the first space opera, it gets an extra star and winds up with 2 instead of 1. Master-minded by smihh super-scientist, their conque Smith told the stories with a vibrancy that left the reader breathless at the adventure and heroism, with enough scientific gobbledygook to instill a sense of wonder – silvery teardrop shaped spacecraft powered by and ‘intertia-less’ drive that could fling them out of the solar system in a matter of seconds, ray guns that dealt death seriea the bad guys but only after refusing the chance to change their ways, of course and the mighty Lenses – weapon, communication device and symbol of the Galactic Patrol’s righteous power, handed to humanity by the ancient peace-loving alien civilisation the Arisians to fight the evil Eddorians.
That’s pretty much the style of the series, and certainly of this first book retrofitted to the series when novelized – you’ll never be in much doubt as to whom to root for. Or a compromise order: I got more than halfway done, which I think was an accomplishment, considering the writing. He barely has emotions, save for lecherous appetites towards Clio.
