I could see why people really enjoyed it, it just wasn’t my style. The timing is everything; Huston doesn’t give us closeups of the glass to underline the possibility that it’s drugged.

Much of Spades dashisll are done off screen, which left us watching his interaction with key characters and having to live the story through dialogue via a false narrative – if everyone is lying, then nothing is true – why am i wasting my time reading this? For instance, Cairo’s calling cards and handkerchiefs are scented with gardenias ; he fusses about his clothes and becomes upset when blood le a scratch ruins his shirt; and he makes subtle fellating gestures with his cane during his interview with Spade.
However, due to Huston’s high demand as a director and unavailability of the major cast members, the sequel was never made. I disliked Sam Spade right from the outset. Pasadena Museum of California Art. Who killed Thursby or Thornby or whatever his name was? The tension arc of the novel is flat all the way through. Especially when you can’t find anything you like in the main character.

I don’t know how I came by this book, but the cover comment ‘possibly the best American detective novel ever written’ got me started. Thanks for telling us about the problem. O’Shaughnessy calls the office, gives an address, then screams before the line goes dead. Huston has pulled is a combination of American ruggedness with the suavity of the English crime school—a blend of mind and muscle—plus a slight touch of pathos.
I have an issue with abandoning books, because I only got back to reading after I promised myself to keep on reading even if I find it difficult. What am I missing – what does it do that other books fashiell its period didn’t? I just didn’t like the Sam Spade character. The Maltese Falcon is considered a classic example of a MacGuffina plot device that motivates the characters of the story, but matles has little relevance.
