I still have the final detailing and cleaning to do. Once the detailed sanding and filling are done, I put a coat of Watco Danish oil on them and do even more detail work to ibl sure that no glue shows. This page was last updated: I’ll check them out. With this kind of problem, there’s not much you can do. The L tweeter foams will be replaced. These are really coming together now.
And for the pics, elgato. The flattest response you can get from them is if you put both bots at the middle of their range. Heavy for shipment, so local pickup is welcome. A couple of AR4x’s snuck into the shop to be refinished too.

Any easy way jbo tell if the drivers are original? Well, I picked them up. The new veneer is all on the L’s and sanded to grit. Glue on the strips for the front of the speaker. If you are a big fan of the east coast sound, odds are the JBLs will not be your cup of tea. I think the light color of the grill cloth along with the redish wood tone will look very classy. But I’m not even going to use the grill frames for these. You will NOT be dissapointed!
Inverted paper dome is a potential indicator of an alnico magnet structure, but JBL snuck the LE ferrite in there too. The drivers should be easy to identify.
The L-pads for the mids and tweets have been cleaned and they work well. The guy was pretty nice, said if I didn’t like them, to call him back. Drivers are in perfect condition. I’ve done some large Advent woofers, but that’s all the experience I have.

L’s with the moldings and new grill frames that will inset into the space made by the moldings. I’ll probably buy them regardless, it looks like I could at least make my money back on CL if I want to get out of them. It really is a striking veneer.

I still scratch my head over how this came about, but there is a BIG difference. The darker areas are where I wetted the veneer tape to scrape it off. Notice the serial number, which was originally on the front as part of the plate at the bottom.
This will be covered with the sapele veneer on 2 sides and then painted black on the inside edges. I thought it best not to try and clean this because I didn’t want to damage the woofer cone. I’ll be making additional grills with plain black grill cloth, so the new owners will have a choice between the two. The fronts and backs have new black paint. I’m not sure if anything else is kbl with them. The Advent wins in my book. Just another couple of photos of this most beautiful wood veneer, Quarter-Sawn Sapele.
