Reading them again, I found that the clunky writing, the cardboard characters, the outdated social mores Don’t trust my rating of this book; it’s part of my childhood, when I read it over and over again, and I have no way of objectively rating it.
The Arisians, benevolent humanoids who have tripplanetary themselves Guardians of Civilization, war with the Eddorians, shapeless, malevolent beings, hungry for power at lenzman price. The women are strong and intelligent, too – strong enough to tell the men off for being overly macho with a glint in their eyes that says how much they love it really and smart enough to know that they should let the menfolk go off to do their duty while they stay behind to make sure the home is looked after.
To a lesser extent, Helmuth is one to Kinnison. The story lurches from one event to the next, crisis to crisis, in an erratic fashion. Conway Costigan, Kimball Kinnison. After the original four novels of the Lensman series were published, Smith expanded and reworked Triplanetary into the first of two prequels for the series.
The novel starts with a cruise ship attacked by space pirates led by a mysterious man known only as Roger.

The Nevians plan to have all of it, since they are just dumb animals, it is no big loss. He was so utterly heroic and devoted to Clio. Triplnetary think these are probably the finest of ‘Doc’ Smith’s ripping space adventures – powered by derring do and the fight for justice, with square jawed heroes and their beautiful women, a World’s Fair-type optimism of technology and a complete lack of regard for the laws of physics.
It’s just not possible for me, the adult, to betray me, the child, by giving this and the rest of the Lensman series anything less than 5 stars. It’s one I grew up with, several decades after its first app 3. They even drain the iron from buildings, spaceships, and human blood.
Honestly, I can triplnaetary why this book would have been great in the thirties and even fifties, but right now it’s borderline unreadable. Costigan has to lead his team to escape the alien menace and save the Triplanetary systems from iron-stealing aliens and Roger. Edward Elmer Smith also E. All illegal drugs are still illegal in the far future, as they should be ; indeed, much of the Galactic Patrol’s work is replicating a galactic DEA with Judge Dredd’s plenipotentiary powers.
Initially, the frigid-blooded, poison-breathingmultidimensional Eichbriefed in a perpetual aura of near-absolute zero coldare truly scary monsters and the epitome of evil. Humanity was considered the most desirable candidate of the four races because each of the others, despite being superior to humanity in many qualities, had a significant flaw: Dronvire, the first Rigellian Lensman, especially.
I think it was the combining Lovecraftian and Cold War elements into the same novel.
The final chapter of Triplanetary tells of the discovery of the inertialess drive that allows faster than light travel. Using deadly “Vee-Two” gas, he seizes secret agent Costigan and Costigan’s love interest Clio, along with the ship’s captain. For reasons I no longer recall, I got rid triplanerary these books at some point, probably during a house move when I was trying to de-clutter.
Triplanetary, First in the Lensman Series

The non-Kinnison line of the Arisians’ human breeding project was marked by “red-bronze-auburn” hair. The swamping of Atlantis, the fall of Rome, the wars that rack the world and blaze through space – all may seem historical accidents to the men involved, but each in reality is a move in a savage universe-wide power struggle And, it more or less succeeds, with each action-packed pulpy misadventure trying its darnedest to be lensma thrilling than the last.
Guess who runs Civilization? Spacemen have their own god, named Klono, who shows up in expletives like “Holy Klono’s tungsten teeth and curving carballoy claws!
I could have sworn that shears and pressors and the inertialess drive took much longer to emerge, but they all come in right in this first book, seemingly developed over a matter of weeks by geniuses who need only one look at an enemy’s polycyclic shield to immediately understand both its foundational principles, and the technology needed to go it one better.
They also employ some efficient but ruthless people in their ranks; for example, Nadreck of Palain. Roger has advanced technology, including a moon-sized starship base, and an army of human-like robots. It is hinted at that humanity would evolve as a whole to the point that achieving Second Stage would be common.
