Seventeen years later and I was tempted to revisit the series again and find out why I’d loved it in the first place, and if the misogyny was really so bad.
Nominally, the first volume is about Suldrun, the beautiful, whimsical and sad daughter of the ambitious King Casmir of Lyonesse. These are however written so sparingly that for the most part I had to go back and re-read them to make sure that what I thought had happened, really did happen.
Suldrun’s Garden (Lyonesse #1) by Jack Vance
If I count a series as one book this somewhere around 7 or 8 on my top Glyneth, at Watershade, ponders her future. Ambitious kings and magicians vie with each other for power and land. Works by Jack Vance. Though his life is spared, Pimfet is still punished harshly despite retrieving the grail, and Madouc begins to truly hate Casmir with all her being.
I wish the whole Cadwal series had been recorded but it hasn’t yet. They are all painted in such a rich and unique way that I found myself rrilogy dreams very much reflective of the book. But Suldrun and her garden are only the beginning of the epic adventure lynoesse continues with several fascinating story lines, many interesting characters and an engaging, imaginative, intriguing plot that can enthrall the reader with its novelty and inventiveness.
I am not displeased. He has a better spy network than the Master of Intrigue Casmir himself.
This apparent lack of focus and leisure pacing has given reason to some reviewers more concerned about linear storytelling to give a lower rating, but in my case it has provided trilogg immersive experience and a continuous sense of wonder at the imaginative powers of the author, already evident in his other major series about The Dying Earth. I’ve reviewed these separately at FanLit. Martin took, no doubt, a lot of inspiration from Lyonesse for his A Song of Ice and Fire series – the geography of both worlds is similar as well as its intrigues, horrors, tragic love stories and magic.

It also seems to give some of the same depth that a longer series of books might develop where place, relationships and plot are built up over time as in Thomas Hardy’s “Wessex” or Trollope’s “Barsetshire”.
The Lyonesse Trilogy – AN SIONNACH FIONN
I was absolutely in love with every line of this trilogy. Tamurello instantly chants a spell and turns into a weasel, pursues the snake into its hole and returns triumphantly with the pearl in his teeth.
Suldrun and Aillas marry in an old ceremony and Suldrun becomes pregnant. Elle ne le restera pas longtemps. Vance also ties the legends to 5th century historic connections — there are references to Britons, Celts, continental Europe and Catholicism.
Suldrun’s main value to the king is for him to marry her to a prince or king of another kingdom to gain an alliance. I’m not sure which is better overall In any case, I didn’t like it much.
The Lyonesse Trilogy
It is a lyonessse where princesses and changelings both can become embroiled in political rivalries and the quest for the grail. Believing that Aillas and her son are dead, Suldrun hangs lyonessse in her garden. From there the narrative expands into three main layers. Notify me of new comments via email. Tamurello accosts Visbhume, learns Dhrun’s secret, and then turns Visbhume into a snake so that he can not reveal the truth to anyone else.
