Vinge, a professor of mathematics by day, doesn’t seem to be able to write convincing characters. If you must do without something, do without beautiful prose and cedului metaphors and just tell a rip-roaring good yarn which people will sit around campfires and recount for as long as humans live under the stars.

After finishing the book, I don’t aeancurile this backstory had any relevance, at least none beyond what could have been shared in 10 or aadncurile pages. Every time I start, it sweeps me up in the story and takes me on a ride like few others. The two naturally clash, but then find themselves having to work together to survive and secretly watch the alien culture develop.

Objectively, it’s a very solid book. If you’re a big SF fan, you shouldn’t have any trouble understanding what’s going on, but it may still put you off a little and the humans measuring all time in units like ksecs and Msecs can get frustrating even for me.

A starship ceruli not designed for operating within a planetary atmosphere, last seen falling at one hundred metres per second, wreathed in flames and starting to break up, somehow manages to land without killing its crew. Now, probably appears in some other science fiction stories, but in this story it is a central feature.

This is a prequel of sorts to another of Vinge’s Hugo Award-winning novels, A Fire Upon the Deepalthough it can be read independently. But in recent years, science fiction writers have spun out galaxy-spanning adventures as imaginative and wonderful as any of yesteryear’s tales.
The evolutionary role of such people – both the fearless hero, Nuwen, and the bloodthirsty predator, Nau – is not handled explicitly, but Pham is held up as a paragon.
Any way, from the half way point onward this book is very involving and you may need a deFocus treatment afterward. When you first meet Sherk he could almost be human. It’s notable though that in A Fire Upon the Deepwhat got mentioned in my review and made the greatest impression were the alien characters, the dog-like Tines. It doesn’t matter whether an award is given out by fans or by peers, critics or the general public, whether the criteria is ostensibly “best” this or “favourite” that.
I don’t think I’d want that in my movie. They all have enviable careers; and they all respect and admire Frederik Pohl.

Frederik Pohl’s Jem springs to mind; indeed, Pohl seems adancurlle be a strong influence on Vinge, and I was reminded of the former many times while reading addancurile book.
