I found the details of Edouard’s struggles with his career, his family, his friendships and love provide images that enhance the main themes, yet also provide narrative drive. And it’s good information. The novel included passages about ponies and bananas.
I appreciated the superior content, and I fell in easily with the book’s transitional nature, imagining Gide as an artist caught between genres. What we have is in large part a sentimental narration of the characters. Perhaps Gide’s trying to resurrect an approach to the novel the decadents tried to do away with. The two authors read each other parts of their respective manuscripts prior to publication, and remained on good terms thereafter, so it appears that neither felt wronged in any way by the similarities.
It’s especially informative and interesting to be witness to the progress of the novel in the Appendix, which reads as Gide’s diary throughout the writing of The Counterfeiters. It begins as two high school friends, Bernard Profitendieu and Olivier Molinier, prepare for the bacchalaureat, their final exam.
