Is the book sexist? The novel is a satire of society as a whole, characterised by hypocrisy and opportunismbut it is not a reforming novel; there is no suggestion that social or political changes or greater piety and moral reformism could improve the nature of society. Dobbin’s infatuation with Amelia is a theme which unifies the novel and one which many have compared to Thackeray’s unrequited bakciul for a friend’s wife.
There is the big canvas of the novel–from Georgian England to colonial India, via London and Brighton, Waterloo and “the comfortable Ducal town of Pumpernickel” p.
It did not help that the social conventions being satirized were far from my experience. Plot and narrative stance aside, the novel is also unneven at the level of style. I suppose it was worth reading for an understanding of one of the great “anti-heroines” of literature, but it was long, dragging, and depressing.
But this was only the beginning … then followed thousand pages of vanity until I felt nauseous about this dfsertaciunilor A half-African character, Miss Swartz, is being described in terms of her positive and negative attributes; positive: Though sometimes considered the “principal founder” of the Victorian domestic novel, it is terribly dated.
The plot itself is good, but it is so hidden behind all of these other things that I felt like I didn’t care. Pinkerton, pentru a-si trai viata in Vanity Fair, un loc imaginar, al urcarii sociale si desertaciubilor cautarii bunastarii financiare.
I have no complaint with how the book is read. However, it did pick up toward the end. I’ve never been a satire fan, but hey it’s Vanity Fair I had to read it! This is one of the most hilarious books I’ve ever read – Becky Sharp kept me laughing. I was mostly bored reading it.
The same goes for Anne Bronte’s The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, where the real terrors of marriage to an addict are laid bare. Becky shows Amelia George’s note, kept all this time desertaciubilor the eve of the Battle of Waterloo, and Amelia finally realises that George was not the perfect man she always thought, and that she has rejected a better man, Dobbin. I don’t know if I can actually consider this a read book because I only read the first 80 pages of a page book.
This might be one of the few times I would like the movie after reading the book. I had been wanting to read it for a long time and, as it was chosen by one of the book clubs, I started reading it in December.
I didn’t like the narrator who talked directly to the reader. Saddened, he goes to India for many years.

In response to these critics, Thackeray explained that he saw people for the most part as “abominably foolish and selfish”. With some empathy and humility, maybe we can hope to become acceptable old persons. In conclusione ci sono un milione di motivi per leggere “Vanity Fair” e un altro milione per leggere “The Crimson Petal and The White” provare anche solo a scorgere gli incipit per credere!
By the 18th century, it was generally taken as a playground and, in the first half of the 19th century, more specifically the playground of the idle and undeserving rich.
She tries to console Amelia, but Amelia responds angrily, disgusted by Becky’s flirtatious behavior with George and her lack of concern about Captain Crawley. Quanti possono dire di non essersi mai macchiati di questi vizi? But why speak about her? Rebecca Sharp “Becky”daughter of an art teacher and a French dancer, is a strong-willed, cunning, moneyless, young woman determined to make her way in society.
From the book I got the sense that Thackeray did not have a very high opinion of women. I enjoyed how the book ended and thought the character development was really clever throughout. I didn’t finish the book; I did not get past page Rating this book 2 stars was a total heartbreak for me.
She was not brilliant, nor witty, nor wise overmuch, nor extraordinarily handsome. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Never in my any of my readings have I ever wanted to jump into a novel and slap a character, that is, until I met Becky Sharp!
