Beatrice and Virgil by Yann Martel

Simply put, Beatrice and Virgil is an allegory of the Holocaust. In the end, I decided to not try to decipher the symbolism, to describe it at all.

I was crushed by this story, virgjl it was so GOOD. So, if you were to compare it with Life of Ane, which shouldn’t be fair but which it really seems like the author want’s us to do, well, here you go. I received this book from the publisher for review And my “investment” is also gone I lately found out that I can give a book ZERO out of 5 stars, so I changed my review to reflect that.

As Beatrice and Virgil’s story reveals itself piecemeal, Henry gets closer and closer to the truth about the taxidermist. The lousiest book I’ve found myself reading in recent times. As the taxidermist bore into him with his steady eyes, a single thought occurred to Henry: The fact that he would continue to listen to said play, which is read in basically its entirety in good portions of the book and which made exercise my forgotten speedreading skills to escape them with merciful quickness, is also somewhat preposterous.

It took me less than 2 days to read it and I took the dust jacket off and handled it with such care that it could have be re-sold as totally new. I think it comes down to the style it’s written in. I was enthralled by the characters, the turns in the story, the quiet and perfectly intricate way the story unfolded.

When Beatriice started it, I had no idea where it was going and so let myself drift on its words, taken where it willed. But he still receives fan mail from all over the world, and one letter changes everything.

It seemed preposterous and I shuffled it to the bottom of my to-be-read pile. Yeah I’m one of those. This usually pays off, and it did here too. The play which is central to the book involving Beatrice and Virgil I’m ignoring Dante is basically Waiting for Godot. I finished this book in less than a day – I could not stop reading it. The main story clocks in under pages, there b tons of white space and the last 8 pages are “games” that feel lifted from works about the Holocaust ranging from Roman Polanski’s The Pianist to Sophie’s Choice.

It happened so fast, I could barely tell if it was real.

The symbolism in the book is too hard to pick apart piece by piece. But as I sat in the bath on Sunday morning, toes pruning up and tea slowly cooling, pondering the final pages of this book … I just shrugged.
