I guess I should have been careful what I wished for when I started likening Spellwright to my favourite fantasy of days gone by! What if the wizard is dyslexic?
Spells spellwrigt literally spelled, using runes of various magical languages, composed by wizards within their bodies and sent forth. She’s a wonderful speaker and if you are in the business of hiring authors to speak at your events, I recommend her.
Worldbuilding is not really what I want to praise here. Charlton combines a unique magical system with an interesting cast of characters to create a story that, while sometimes afflicted with “new writer” issues like some troubles with pacingis still an entertaining addition to the fantasy genre.

There is some great witty dialogue in this book as well. Besides this one limitation, however, he’s also quite capable and really pretty powerful.
Spellright figured, because I’m cynical and I hate people, that Charlton would be all flirty to the cute girls or guys Do you know what this means? His greatest power — magic — becomes a perilous, disobeying and likely catastrophic force of nature when Nicodemus spells even the most elementary of magical prose.

This was definitely what I would call a light read. There have been many books whereby I have found myself yawning due to the information overload spanning pages as the characters are pushed to the back of our minds — yet Spellwright cannot be accused of that.
At 25, Nicodemus is still an apprentice to Magister Shannon, not able to wield anything but the simplest spells without error, mistrusted by the rest of the academy and constantly confronted with the fact that he can never be a great wizard, much less the Halcyon he was spellwriight to be.

Is it a perfect novel? My problem was I just couldn’t picture the magic system.
Charlton is creating a different type of magical world here, and I cannot wait to read more about it!
I had to keep going back and re-reading previous pages when I had finally been given enough information to understand them.
Unfortunately, book one was not to be spellwrighh meaning I could not pick up the series there and then. The character is eminently believable, and his difficulty spellwrigght spelling will strike a chord with many.
My wife is very smart, but reading and writing will always be, to some degree, difficult for her. I didn’t even know there was a class like this in med school.

There were times when I couldn’t get a solid grip on how the magic happened. Hellboy first trailer. Doing either spelwlright of those things is a reason for kudos, but doing both at the same time is mind-boggling. If you want to read one of the promising debut novels which is exceedingly charming, offers passion, breathes magic with every syllable and twist you around the little finger within minutes then there is no way out to read Spellwright.
