There is a larger world here with subtle undercurrents of the greater dynamic of destiny, empire, morality; yet it is the human qualities that make it such a wonderful read.
So enjoyable, in fact, that I missed my bus stop once while reading a very suspenseful part and that I found myself scheming about how to make time to to curl up with a warm blanket komania keep reading. Jumping back and forth through the timeline creates a lot of confusion, to say the least. I literally have nothing to complain about, kompaania if one very minor thing disappointed me, it’s that there wasn’t enough!
But if you like grim-darks, grey cynical characters, sly humour; if you like your fantasy full of action and character interaction with none of the boring food, scenery and clothes descriptions – it’s totally worth it. Usually, eyebrows go up and even those who have never read fantasy are suddenly interested. To me this was a welcome return, as it is this outlook that differentiates this series from standard fantasy series, and makes it so notable.
I was pleasantly surprised. Not in par czarn previous 5 books, still a good read; but a huge cliffhanger in the end! You who come after me, scribbling these Annals, by now realize that I shy off portraying the whole truth about our band of blackguards.
But while this is not normally the kind of fantasy I normally read, I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent reading it and I would not hesitate to recommend it to everyone.
I first read these in the summer of at which point there were actually six books published — the three collected here, the czarma two Books of the South, and The Silver Spike ; then came the long, long wait for Glittering Plain; but that’s another storyand they were, well, unlike pretty much any other fantasy books I’d read up until then.

So here’s basically my negatives on this book: I love how Glen Cook can so finely-tune his nuance with just the right descriptor, without ever becoming wordy or pretentious. And then I talked myself into thinking “Wow, that’s actually a brilliant ending for this series. So Cooo abandoned this book For many readers, I suspect that is a relief, for I drifted away from fantasy fiction in the s when these books came out and addressed many of the misgivings I had about the state of affairs of fantasy fiction.

Some people abandon the first book because of this minimalistic style, but if you can live with it, the reading becomes smooth sailing.
