As thanks and doubtless payment he received the beautifully written manuscript of this piece, probably composed in February or March Writings not in English. The collapse of his health in unfortunately put a stop to further plans.
This “rediscovered” Etude is titled in manuscript, “Pour les arpeges composes,” but except for the presence of arpeggios and the Ab-major tonality, it bears little resemblance to the previously published etude of the efude name.

Despite a general similarity of tempo, Howat’s Reflets dans l’eau is a monochrome stagnant pool alongside the dappled light of Gieseking’s gently flowing stream. While Debussy would dbeussy have refined it further, the version that survives still provides a fascinating glimpse into his compositional workshop, as well as a beautiful Etude in its own right.
