I’m giving this three stars because it’s Diana Wynne Jones and I can’t bear to give her anything less. All told, though, a very nice book, and coupled with the first clearly part of a series, but reasonably well contained too. Having been seen and recognized during the Earl’s assassination, Mitt is forced to flee for his life. Though everything up to this point was well done, it is worth reading to the end just to get to Part 4, the Holy Islands.
Unfortunately after raving about the complexity of Diana Wynne Jones’s writing, I found an example of what happens when she doesn’t quite get it right. Anyway, Jones is just as excellent with serious fantasy as she is with funny fantasy like Chrestomanci. Diana Wynne Jones has a way of writing that just speaks to me perfectly.
