He covers 9 of the disciplines, some of the more obvious, like prayer, solitude and Bible reading but also some less discussed like celebration and suffering. If this book were a motivational poster, the font would be Papyrus. The various spiritual disciplines makes sense for our world today. One point the author makes is that sometimes out scripture reading is a check the box to do item and then we move on.

John’s writing seems very light at times, but there is always so much in it that sticks with you or comes back later when you need it.

I had read some of the others, but did not read this orhberg I found I was struggling with some of the issues he highlights so well here. But we do know this: I think John Ortberg does a wonderful job of setting out the idea of spiritual formation and why it is an important aspect of life.

Finally, although Ortberg recognizes that challenges attempt to derail growth, he also observes that tests and trials often support the spiritual growth process.
